It played a rather large role, Maryland was founded by Catholics for Catholics as a safe haven from persecution. Northern colonies were generally reformed of some sort (i.e. Calvinist) and the southern colonies were generally Anglican. The middle colonies ended up being a weird mix, but if you spend time in Maryland you can see plenty of Catholic influences.

No, children were with the men who settled Jamestown. This was not enterprise for families, but for business. It was a private enterprise funded by a group of venture capitalists called the Virginia Company. With in six months of the 104 men who arrived over half had died. A child wouldn't have survived the first weeks let alone six months.
Well most people in the middle colonies, especially Pennsylvania wanted a place to practice their own religion. That is one of the main reasons they went to the New World. The Middle colonies had a very wide toleration of Religion accepting most of them. For Example: Pennsylvania had mostly Quakers, but did allow pretty much any other religion. So the role it played was attracting people from Europe who were tired of being persecuted because of their religion I guess. I'm doing a project on that right now so I hope that helped.
when the Puritans came to Massachusetts back in the 1600s, they were seeking religious freedom
