It was the world's first arena. We follow its model today. It was built by three Flavian emperors Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian. Construction stated in 72 AD and the first games were held in 80 AD. It is the first of it kind and it is a brilliant design combining design with practicality. Games and fights were held right to the end of the empire, During the middle ages it was used as a fortress and from the 15th century it provided building materials. This structure was built without modern day tools and has three levels of floors for seating the people who came to view the games held there. It could seat 50,000 people with comfort and ease. It had drinking fountains, restrooms, numbered seating areas, and a canvas covered area that was shading seats in the hottest part of the day. It is located just east of the Foro Romano and comprised of two levels. The first level is a labyrinth of passages beneath the arena itself. In Roman times there was a wooden flooring covered with canvas and sand (the word arena comes from the Latin word for sand) that made the top level. There were four entrances used by gladiator's stagehands, and corpse removers. There were also trap doors in the floor for a dramatic entrance on to the arena floor. Animals were lifted by pulleys through the trap doors on to the floor of the arena. Games started in the morning and continued all day. A lunch break was taken and then after the highlight of the day was the gladiatorial battles.

The Colosseum is very special due to many factors. Its age, construction and durability are three of them. The Colosseum is/was also unique at the time of its construction with features that other ampitheateres never had, such as the vast underground network of chambers to hold gladiators, prisoners, and animals. In that "basement" there were also elevators used to raise scenery, men and animals to the arena floor. Recently, evidence has been discovered that the underground walls and passages were brightly painted and decorated. Other factors that added to the uniqueness of the Colosseum were the outer decorations and the vomitoria, which were the exit gates/passages that spewed people out after the events. It is said that the entire arena which held 50,000 people, could be emptied in 15 minutes.

The Colosseum is unique because of its size, its amenities and its age. When it was first built it was the largest amphitheater in the Roman world and the most elaborate. It had not only the surface arena floor, which could be flooded for water battles and then quickly drained and dried, but underground rooms, cells and passageways. In these rooms the gladiators or prisoners waited for their turn "upstairs". There were cages for the wild animals and stage scenery. there were elevators to raise background settings, then animals and men in dramatic fashion. The imperial box and the senatorial section boasted marble seating and there was even a huge shade that could be puled over the arena during the times of the hot afternoon sun. Its age speaks for itself, it was begun in 72 AD and finished in 80, making it just shy of 2000 years old.
