There is no way of answering this question with a specific figure. Homicide detectives are first and foremost sworn law enforcement officers of the local agencies that employ them. The salaries and various pay scales are public record and in addition there usually is a longevity provision built-in to their salary as well. Detectives tend to work long hours on cases and, thus, some have the opportunity to make quite a bit of overtime. Contact your local law enforcement agency for their pay scale.
A homicide detective gets at least 100-180 thousand a year.
Homicide Detectives are simply highly experienced investigators who specialize in a particular crime. Their "jurisdiction" is the geographical boundaries of their governmental employer, whatever that may be. In reality, when investigating offenses; although these investigators are accorded a high degree of cooperation by other departments, they are granted no special authority, or deputization, in any other jurisdiction (e.g.: a New York City homicide detective cannot "arrest" you in Baltimore. Legally, a Baltimore officer would have to make the actual arrest).
This varies by jurisdiction: each law-enforcement agency has its own pay scale for all personnel, not just homicide detectives. But I can say one thing: they make a killer salary!
Detectives do NOT determine the cause of death. Depending on the jurisdiction, either a Coroner or a Medical Examiner will make the determination of the cause of death.
Being able to look at dead bodiesAnother View: Having the ability to thoroughly investigate suspected criminal deaths and skillfully interrogate possible suspects and analyze evidence in order to (hopefully) bring a successful conclusion to a homicide investigation.
