The Christians who protested Catholic teachings came to be known as?

Protestants by definition protest some Catholic teachings. The various branches of Protestantism broke away from the Catholic Church in the 1500s. Eastern Orthodox churches broke away earlier after disagreements over doctrine, so could also be said to "protest" some Catholic teachings, although Orthodox and Catholic churches are often said to be "in communion" with each other, which cannot be said of Catholic and Protestant Churches.

Were there more catholics or protestants during the civil war?

Protestants, by a huge margin. England, the mother country, had changed from Catholicism in the 1500s. Of the original 13 colonies, Maryland was begun as a haven for the remaining (and persecuted) English Catholics, though Maryland could not exclude members of other religions. There were few Catholics elsewhere in the original colonies, and few came to America before the potato blight struck Ireland in the 1840s. Th Irish began then to immigrate in very large numbers in the 1840s and were the first large Catholic group in the US. Most of these arrived and lived in the north and fought in the northern armies, causing resentment of "foreign hirelings" in the south. There was also a wave of immigration following a number of failed revolutions in Europe n 1848; many of these immigrants were German and some were Catholic. Again these new Americans lived mostly in and fought for the north, and were called "Hessians" by southerners, borrowing a term from the American Revolution.

Did Protestantism or Catholicism start first?

Catholicism and Orthodoxy came first. The Protestant Churches began after when Martin Luther formed a new Church and from that example, sprang up more churches and caused a snowball effect that is why there are literally over a thousand denominations.

Who were Protestants?

Protestants are pretty much any Christian denomination other than the Catholics. However some assume that they are mostly members of the Church of England, ie. the Anglicans. In general terms, it is the denominations that have developed from the split with the Catholic Church which began with the Reformation. Some of the main ones are the Lutherans, Reformed churches, Methodists, Anglican, and Presbyterian amongst others.
