A 'black sheep' is an outcast, or outsider, in a social group.

For instance, consider a stereotypical family. Mom, Dad, Daughter, Son.

All of these people are Christians, go to church on a regular basis, pay taxes, etc.

The son goes away to college, and comes back an Atheist. The rest of his family remains devout Christians. In religious terms, he could be the "black sheep" of the family.

Simply put: Sheep are white. Black sheep aren't. They're different from the normal.
