Akira Toriyama made huge money on Dragon Ball, but his taxes got high and he was doing one-shots and you don't get paid good for one-shots. So he lost a lot of money over the years, but thanks to game design he was able to get most of it back. So yeah they can make pretty big money if their manga are popular.
