What is the purpose of jailbreaking an Iphone?

For the same reason any user jail-breaks any phone - they want to use a different carrier to the one the phone was originally locked to ! It's always puzzled me why phones come locked to specific carriers anyway ! Since there's always a way to release them ffrom their original carrier - I don't see the point !

When you jailbreak your iPhone, a 3rd party app store called Cydia will be installed allowing you to do things like use custom fonts or extensions or other things you couldn't normally do like make your iPhone look like an Android.

Because (a) they're not happy with the carrier it's currently tied to and (b) they don't want to pay the huge fee their existing carrier would normally charge to unlock their handset.
