angioplasty- angi/o means vessel and -plasty means surgical repair or angiorrhaphy.
There are different types of repair and the medical terminology will depend upon the procedure carried out. In general - plasty is the term used for repair like profundoplasty. Stenosis of the artery can be treated by dilating the vessel - Angioplasty. Endarterectomy is used for open repair of a blocked artery and repair may require a patch graft. A bypass procedure is carried out if the block cannot be repaired by angioplasty or endarterectomy. Stents may also be used like endovascular repair of Aortic Aneurysm (EVAR), or an open repair is done doing using a graft.
Thrombectomy
Coarctation of the aorta and Aortic Stenosis both describe narrowing of the aorta.Narrowing of the aorta is called Aortic Stenosis. Commonly caused by plaque buildup known as atherosclerosis.
Arteriorrhaphy is the medical term for suture of an artery. This is when a surgeon will close up an artery. If an artery was severed, they would reattach both sides of the blood vessel walls, like stitching up a deep cut. A related term, angiorrhaphy, means suture of any vessel.
Phlebitis is the medical term meaning inflammation of a blood vessel. (Thrombophlebitis is the medical term meaning inflammation of a blood vessel with a clot.)
Angiotripsy is the medical term meaning crushing of a vessel. It's a procedure used to stop hemorrhage.
