Discernment; the ability to tell between truth and lie, or to understand a truer or hidden meaning, is given as a gift and a tool by the power of the priesthood through the gift of the Holy Ghost. The bearer must be living worthily and the power of Discernment can only be used in either personal decisions or over those whom which you have direct stewardship over; yourself, your family and those whom fall under the scope of your authorized calling. An example would be the ward or branch bishop whom has the authority and power to use discernment when interviewing a member. He has the ability given him to know the the truth or hidden thoughts of those whom are in his council. In your personal life, discernment given by the spirit can guide and direct you in personal decision making. An important note: you cannot assume the power of discernment for those whom you are not called to serve, unless so dictated by the power of the Holy Ghost.
