What is the meaning of adobe?

Adobe is both a style of architecture and the name of its principle component. Adobe bricks are made of clay and straw that has been dried in the sun. The bricks are usually about 4" thick, 6" wide and 1 foot long, although they can be any convenient size. This is only practical in very dry areas, for example the American southwest. Once the bricks are thoroughly dried, they are stacked like blocks and covered with a mortar made of the same clay and straw mixture.

Adobe architecture typically uses rounded corners, and because the bricks are stacked the floor plan can be almost any shape. The attached link leads of pictures of a very famous adobe church in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico.
