Hungary is a very secular country politically, although the majority of Hungarians identify themselves as Roman Catholic (approximately 50% of the population), and another 20% either as Protestant or other (or non denominational) Christian. There is a small Buddhist, Jewish and Muslim presence as well. The most rapidly growing of the minority religions is Buddhism, mostly accounted for by increasing Immigration from China and Taiwan.
However, only a minority of Hungarians who associate themselves with a religion attend religious activities regularly. Approximately 15% of Hungarians claim to have no religion.
From my experience in living in Hungary, I'd say that the typical Hungarian's religion is non-practicing Catholic or Christian--meaning that they identify with one or the other, but that is about the extent of their commitment. I'd say approximately 15% Catholics and Christians do attend church regularly and follow the laws and customs of their religion.
1. Christianity (Catholicism, Protestantism, Orthodoxy) is the largest in population size in total percentage
2. Judaism is the second largest in population size in total population
3. Other is the third largest
4. No Religion is the fourth largest
Religion does not really play a vital role in Hungary except when it comes weddings and such occasions. Many Hungarians do not practice regularly or belong to any particular religious group formally. Officially, around 72 percent of Hungarians are Roman Catholics.
Hungarians bury their dead. As far as spiritual beliefs are concerned, that would depend on the religion of the individual. Hungary has a number of different religions practiced within its borders, though the most popular is Christianity. Therefore, most Hungarians would hope they were going to go to heaven when they die.
