You must be at least 5 years old to be able to drink alcohol at home, supervised by a parent or guardian (it is an offence for a younger child to do so).

The youngest you can be to buy it yourself is 16, as a part of a meal in a pub or restaurant. If you want to buy it on its own, you must be 18.

There is a specific offence of allowing or causing a child under 5 years to consume alcohol. Other age restrictions in the UK relate to the purchase and possession of alcohol rather than drinking.

No one under 18 can purchase alcohol and it is also an offence to purchase alcohol for someone under 18. There are in fact some exceptions to this and younger people are allowed to purchase and drink wine with certain meals.

There is no specific offence of drinking alcohol under 18 years and it is accepted that parents can allow a child to drink at home. Drinking alcohol in public places is controlled mainly by local regulation and there is no single rule that applies throughout the country.
