In the book, The Sign of the Beaver, by Elizabeth George Speare, I came across the theme that friendship can over power differences in culture, diversity and different religion. I think this because during this story, Matt's dad leaves Matt alone in the woods while the dad goes to get their rest of the family. While Matt is alone, he meets an Indian boy named Attean. They become very close friends (almost brothers) even though they are very different from each other. During this friendship, these 2 boys teach each other their different cultures and different ways to do things. For example, Matt would fish with a fishing pole and Attean would stab the fish with a man-made spear. This is evidence for why I think the theme has something to do with friendship and diversity. The theme is also based on survival. Matt has to learn many ways on how to survive-ways he hasn't learned, before. In the end of the book the snowshoes sets Matt free, meaning he now knows how to survive the winter thanks to Attean.

Some important events are:

  • When Attean becomes a "man"
  • When Ben steals Matt's gun
  • When Attean and his grand father heal Matt after he gets stung by the bees
  • When Attean takes Matt to his tribe to see what they do as traditions
