Spider monkeys live in tropical rainforests located in central and south America and can be found in far north as Mexico. Other species can be found in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Brazil. They thrive in evergreen, semi deciduous and mangrove forests and almost never come down to ground level.

These monkeys live in the highest parts of the trees found in rain forests, known as the 'upper canopy'. They prefer undisturbed high forests, but sadly due to the loss of their preferred habitat, they being forced into different types of forests.

The spider monkey are well adapted for life in the treetops as they are strong and agile, and can fond all kinds of food, such as nuts, fruits, leaves, bird eggs, and Spiders. This means the diet of the spider monkey is omnivorous.

The spider monkeys' habitat is disappearing at an alarming rate. It is thought that over 35,000 acres of mature rain forest a day, is being destroyed to make way for new farm land. This habitat loss coupled with many monkeys being shot for food and their low maturation, is pushing this species closer to the brink of endangerment and extinction.

Any organisation that helps prevent deforestation in South America will help save these marvellous monkeys from extinction.

They live in relatively high trees in the rainforest, feeding on fruit, berries, leaves, and bugs. There are often other monkeys in the same areas, as well as snakes, lizards, tropical birds, and the occasional jaguar, ocelot, or crocodile.

There are a wide variety of tropical plants including the large trees and long vines, as well as fungi, flowers, and epiphytes such as the orchids.

They have long limbs and tails, and small bodies so that they can easily move through trees and vines. Their prehensile tails allow them to better use their arms and legs for balancing and feeding. They forage mainly high in the canopy to avoid predators (most of these are down on the forest floor). They have social behaviors that encourage cooperative existence within each species.
