A catapult uses a spoon like arm, if you will, that is pulled back and held under pressure to launch an object to its desired target. A trebuchet uses a sling type sack that is suspended under the arm to launch an object to the target.

Where was the trebuchet invented?

The traction trebuchet was first invented between 5th - 4th century BC, when it is first mentioned in a 4th century Chinese text. The first evidence of a trebuchet is a 4th century text compiled in pre-Imperial China. The Chinese named the later counterweight trebuchet Huihui Pao, where Pao means bombard. The trebuchet spread to the Mediterranean by 6th century AD. The Byzantine Empire began using the trebuchet in the 6th century, and it is mentioned in the Strategicon of Maurice by Emperor Maurice. The counterweight trebuchet is mentioned in the work of the 12th century Byzantine historian Niketas Choniates.

What is the difference between traction motor and general motor?

What is the difference between catapults and trebuchets?

What does a trebuchet look like?

The only difference between a trebuchet and a catapult is a catapult is triggered by a spring mechanism and a trebuchet is triggered by weight placed on the throwing. You put weight on the short end of the throwing arm and your projectile goes in a sling attached to the other end. When you release the throwing arm the weight pulls the long end of the throwing arm and launches the sling over and around the rest of the trebuchet. The weight can be positioned in one of two ways, it can be in a fixed position on the end of the throwing arm then there must be wheels attached to the base of the trebuchet so the swinging of the arm doesn't tip over the trebuchet. The other option is to attach the weight with a swinging mechanism such as a basket attached to the end of the arm.

What kind of lever is a trebuchet?

A trebuchet is a Class 1 lever since the fulcrum is placed between the effort (pulling the counterweight) and the load (the projectile). This lever type allows for a mechanical advantage that enables the trebuchet to launch projectiles with great force and distance.

What is the difference between traction control and ABS?
