Shires were used to develop Clydesdales, so they are similar, but Shires tend to be heavier bodied, and stand taller on average. Clydesdales also have a strong overo/sabino gene, often leaving large amounts of body white. Shires posses a grey gene, which Clydes do not (all clydes are bay, or black, with a very rare brown).

The difference is that they are two different breeds from different parts of the world.

The Clydesdale is from Scotland and was developed in the 1800's. They were created by crossing Flemish stallions on local mares and Shire horses. The first breed society was created in 1877.

The Friesian horse is from the Netherlands and was developed in the middle ages (16th-17th centuries or 1500's -1600's) It is an older breed than the Clydesdale and may have contributed to the foundation of the Shire breed and thus the Clydesdale through the Shire infusion. Friesians were developed using the primitive Forest horse (now extinct), Iberian bloodlines, local stock ,and probably some imported stock along the way.
