Puritans had very rigid beliefs in the original sin which states that Adam had sinned, and all men were therefore sinners. God in his infinite mercy might save a few from eternal damnation, but they must work hard at proving their worthiness Their belief even but babies as the condemned if they died at birth before they had the chance to prove their righteousness.
The Bible says:
Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
From this verse we can say, 'sin is missing the mark, sin is being unlike God'.
Answer:
"...SIN IS the transgression of the law." (I John 3:4)
"...I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, THOU SHALT NOT COVET." (Rom.7:7)
According to the Bible... SIN IS: the breaking of the Ten Commandments.
Sin is transgression of the law:-
1 John 3
4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
Romans 4
15 Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.
This "law" refers to the Law of Moses, which includes the 10 Commandments.
These 10 commandments are listed in Exodus 20:-
First:-
3 " You shall have no other gods before Me.
Second:-
4 " You shall not make or worship any idols
Third:-
7 " You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain,...
Fourth:-
8 " Remember the Sabbath day,
Fifth:-
12 " Honor your father and your mother,...
Sixth:-
13 " You shall not murder
Seventh:-
14 " You shall not commit adultery.
Eighth:-
15 " You shall not steal.
Ninth:-
16 " You shall not bear false witness ...
Tenth:-
17 " You shall not covet...anything ..."
Under the Old Covenant (ie before Jesus Christ died) so long as you had not actually DONE any of these you had obeyed the Law.
However, Christ narrowed this done to thinking about breaking them:-
Matthew 5 :-
17 "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
18 "For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
21 "You have heard that the ancients were told, 'You shall not commit murder' ...
22 "But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother......and whoever says to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty... and whoever says, 'You fool [Gk. 'Raca'],' shall be guilty ....
27 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery';
28 but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
33 "Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, 'You shall not make false vows, ...
34 "But I say to you, make no oath at all,
And so on.
Under the Old Covenant if you hadn't physically actually broken any of the 10 Commandments you had not sinned. However, under the New Covenant just THINKING of doing anything prohibited is the same as PHYSICALLY breaking them and is therefore a sin. For example, lusting after a woman is the same as committing adultery. So, the Bible definition of sin is breaking the 10 Commandments even by thinking about it.
In the Bible, yeast represents sin.
In Christianity, yes, it is a sin to steal anything, including the Bible.
