Also called Murfreesboro in Northern Tennessee.

An inconclusive battle fought in freezing conditions through New Year's Eve 1862-63, where the Confederates under Braxton Bragg eventually abandoned the field, so it was counted as a victory for the Union under the newly-appointed William Rosecrans.

Nothing came of it for few months, then Rosecrans started a skilful move towards Chattanooga that could have destroyed the enemy. But his divisions became widely separated in the mountains, and the chance was missed.

The Battle of Stones River was fought from December 31, 1862, to January 2, 1863, during the American Civil War near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. It was a Union victory led by General William S. Rosecrans against Confederate forces commanded by General Braxton Bragg. The battle was one of the bloodiest of the war and ultimately secured central Tennessee for the Union.
