Depends on what you mean by "background." The show has given a few hints about Sheldon's early life, but the information is sparse and (sometimes) inconsistent. For example, it has never been stated from which university he graduated.

Sheldon is from Galveston, Texas; the son of less than stellar parents. He was a child prodigy in the sciences, a fact that he constantly reminded others of -- which brought nothing but scorn from them. Two major exceptions were his mother and his grandmother, and even the former has had to remind Sheldon to curb his arrogant and eccentric nature.

On more than one occasion, Sheldon has insisted, "I'm not crazy -- my mother had me tested!"

Sheldon graduated from college at age 14, worked at Heidelberg, and ended up as professor of theoretical physics at the California Institute of Technology.
