The German President is known as the Bundespräsident.

He is elected for a period of five years by the Bundesversammlung (Federal Assembly), which is made up of elected members of the Bundestag and an equal number of chosen members from local and state politics and public life.

The current Bundespräsident is Horst Köhler, who took office on July 1, 2004 and won a second term on May 27, 2009.
