The most common form is Neopaganism (the most well-known form of neopaganism is Wicca).

Wicca can be separated into many different "traditions", which means people practise Wicca in different ways.

Some common themes of Wicca include the ritual practice of magic to achieve desired outcomes, and the celebration of approximately 8 seasonal festivals- Sabbats.

Some, but not all, wiccans revere Gods or Goddesses, or Nature deities.

The practice of Wicca is a modern form of paganism or witchcraft (but is not related to Satanism - a witch is not necessarily a Satanist; the term has more than one interpretation).

There are also many other different pagan religions in the modern world, including:

· Buddhism

· Taoism

· Druidism

·

The fact that there is a diverse range of people who can be classed as a pagan should indicate that the pagan body or movement is not just a simple or small movement it is sometimes made out to be. It is common for groups, not just Christians, to depict people that they don't understand or like as a collective unit with one aim or goal whereas the reality is very different.

It can be hard to give a distinct definition of what a pagan is but you should bear in mind that as a pagan, you can believe in a faith that has one god, lots of gods or no god at all! However, a pagan will focus on the fact people have a responsibility of their own as opposed to believing in the salvation that comes from a higher power which is a major factor of the Christian, Muslim or Jewish faiths.

What did witches do to be persecute by the church?

Several reasons: 1: The Bible teaches that witchcraft is evil and an enemy of godly teaching. 2: The symbols and rituals of witchcraft and satanism are direct opposite of those of the church. The church was against all these as it made light of the churches holy rituals. (Actually the symbol of witchcraft is a Pentagram or Triquetta. Just like the cross, when inverted the Pentagram becomes a symbol that Satanists use.) 3: Many church leaders were mistaken in condemning the people and not the sin. 4. Paganism predates Christianity and was the predominate religion before Christ was born. Like Christianity, Paganism has many denominations such as Witchcraft. The Roman empire adopted Christianity and Roman soldiers killed all who opposed. Wicca is a modern form of Witchcraft that has one basic rule, Harm none. It is not the same type of Witchcraft talked about in the Christian Bible, it began long after the Bible was written by several different people sharing their opinion on what took place, which is why it is often confused and interpreted in many ways.

What modern cultures practice paganism?

That depends on how you define Paganism. If one wanted to "stretch" the definition, and culture that celebrates and or spiritually identifies with marking and celebrating the natural cycles of life and the earth. In more general terms, many tribal and shamanic tribes in non-industrialized parts of the world still practice what we in the west would refer to as a paganism of some sort. Some sects of what is referred to as Hinduism also constitute paganism. Technically, the celebration of groundhog day and even Christmas is pagan in its origin.

What is the difference between pagans and wiccans?

Paganism, by definition, is any various religion outside of Christianity, Judaism, or Islam. Wicca is a type of Paganism, and falls under its umbrella. A comparison would be like saying Christianity is a religion, but Southern Baptist is a form of religion that comes under Christianity as a whole. More specifically, Pagan means "country dweller", where Wicca means "witchcraft". One does not have to participate in Wicca in order to be a pagan, but those who practice Wicca are all considered Pagans by default.
