Hummingbirds will eat almost any insect small enough to be swallowed, including aphids, flies, gnats, midges, beetles, and moths. They also eat Spiders and harvestmen ("daddy longlegs").

Small invertebrates are critical food sources for hummingbirds, meeting their needs for protein, fats, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. This is especially important for rapidly growing nestlings, and nesting female hummingbirds spend much of their time hunting rather than gathering nectar. Hummingbirds may hunt invertebrates by gleaning them from bark, flowers or leaves, hawking them from the air, or plucking them from spider webs. To get the required amount of protein for a healthy diet, an adult hummingbird must eat several dozen insects each day.

American Kestrals, Goliath Bird-Eating Spiders, eagles, and even Praying Mantises are big threats to hummingbirds. Kestrals swoop down on these feisty birds and eat them, the spiders eat them, eagles attack and eat their eggs, and Praying Mantises eat small young hummingbirds.
