Feudalism was its own economic system and was relatively unique in creating a rigid system based on local barons who would control tracts of land worked by peasants and patrolled by knights. What the peasants grew would be tithed and these tithes would serve to feed the barons and knights as well as exchange for goods produced in other baronies.
The feudal contract was when the king would have serfs and freeholders work in the fields and in return he would give them protection if they were in danger. But if a serf ever ran away from the castle or manor he would have to survive on his own for one year and one day and then he would be a freeman and the rest of his family would be free with him.

Feudalism pervaded all forms of life in the middle ages. There was a ruling class ( political/social) that controlled the economic system. The peasant and serf classes who did the labor for the ruling class were kept that way through taxes ( economic) and the inability to move out of that class to a upper class ( social/political/economic).
