It's about a family with three kids who suddenly lose their father, to an illness or an accident, I forget which. So the mother and her three children are forced to move in with her parents (the children's maternal grandparents).
The grandparents are extremely cruel. They neglect the children and abuse them. All three children are virtually held prisoner in this one bedroom, and the youngest child is sick, but the grandparents don't care.
Meanwhile, their mother is nowhere to be found. She hardly ever comes to see them. She is busy doing penance -- she actually gets whipped with a real Indiana Jones whip -- trying to win her parents' forgiveness. They had not approved of her marriage, and were furious that she had defied them.
Eventually, the littlest one dies of her illness. The two older children escape the room to tell their mother. They walk right into her second wedding. She is getting married to a man of her parents' choosing, and she looks radiantly happy about it. When the children approach her, she denies knowing them. She denies that they are her children, and insists that she's never seen them before. The grandparents back up her story.
Enraged and shocked, the children get into a physical struggle with her. She accidentally falls off the balcony and is killed.
It's not a great movie, but not a bad one, either. It's definitely worth renting, although you probably won't be watching it over and over again.
It is about children locked in the attic by their grandparents.
