While most any instrument is capable of participating in a Klezmer or Klezmer fusion ensemble there are instruments that have historically played a significant role. Also, there must be consideration for the three distinct groups of instruments that can make up an ensemble.

The first group being the highest in pitch most often carries the melody. These shall be referred to as the lead instruments. Appropriate, and characteristic leads are first and foremost either the Clarinet or the fidl (violin), but others can be considered, such as trumpet, flute (piccolo), or Mandolin (closest equivalent to the balalaika).

The second group are slightly lower in pitch range and begin with providing supporting figures and accompaniment. They shall be referred to as the harmony and counterpoint instruments. Characteristic choices might include Trombone, viola, or cello, but alto and tenor saxes would also fit here.

The third and final group provide the bottom of the ensemble sound and the bulk of the accompanying chords and the base rhythms. Appropriate choices here might be Piano, Accordion, Bass, Tuba, and drums, but, Keyboard, guitar, or Banjo could also do nicely.
