Chemically what happens is the sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) reacts with ammonia (NH3)

tor produce hydrazine (N2H4) and other toxic gasses.

When ammonia and chlorine are mixed together, they react to form a toxic gas called chloramine. This gas can cause respiratory issues, irritation of the eyes, throat, and lungs, as well as other health problems. It is important to avoid mixing these two chemicals together.

Chlorine Gas acts as a choking agent, searing the lining of the respiratory tract.

Solutions of ammonia (5-10% by weight) are used as household cleaners, particularly for glass. These solutions are irritating to the eyes and mucous membranes (respiratory and digestive tracts), and to a lesser extent the skin. They should never be mixed with chlorine-containing products or strong oxidants, for example household bleach, as a variety of toxic and carcinogenic compounds are formed (e.g., chloramine, hydrazine, and chlorine gas). Ammonia and sodium hypochlorite react to form a number of products, depending on the temperature, concentration, and how they are mixed. The main reaction is chlorination of ammonia, first giving chloramine (NH2Cl), then NHCl2 and finally nitrogen trichloride (NCl3). These materials are very irritating to eyes and lungs and are toxic above certain concentrations.

Inhaling Bleach and Ammonia is not the safest thing to do, especially if you are inhaling a pre-mixed batch of the two chemicals. When the two chemicals are mixed they put off Chlorine gas which is extremely harmful to the human body. Chlorine gas was used as a chemical weapon during World War I and later by Nazi Germany in World War II, so this is not something to play around with.

Best of luck,

Dr. Dave

Do Bleach and ammonia produces Chlorine gas?

Yes, mixing bleach (which contains chlorine) and ammonia can produce chlorine gas, which is toxic and can cause respiratory issues. It's important to never mix these two substances together as they can create a dangerous and potentially deadly chemical reaction.

What happens when you mix ammonia and lighter fluid?

Mixing ammonia and lighter fluid can create a dangerous chemical reaction that can produce toxic fumes, cause a fire, or even lead to an explosion. It is important to never mix these two substances together.

What happens when you mix chlorine and fertilizer?

Mixing chlorine with fertilizer can create toxic gases such as chlorine gas, nitrogen trichloride, or phosgene. These gases can be harmful if inhaled and may cause respiratory problems, irritation, or even be fatal in high concentrations. It is important to never mix chlorine with fertilizers or any other chemicals unless directed by a professional.

What happens when Ammonia and iron 3 mix?

When ammonia and iron(III) mix, they can form a complex known as tetraammineiron(III) ion ( [Fe(NH3)4(H2O)2]3+ ). This complex is a coordination compound consisting of iron ion surrounded by ammonia ligands. This reaction is an example of coordination chemistry where ammonia acts as a ligand to the iron ion.

What happens when you mix ammonia Fe2O3 and H2O2?

When you mix ammonia (NH3), iron(III) oxide (Fe2O3), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), a complex series of reactions can occur. The iron(III) oxide can catalyze the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen gas. Ammonia can act as a weak base in this reaction. The overall result would depend on the concentrations and conditions of the reactants.
