Because the flood waters produce water for the farmers
Farmers on the River Nile benefitted from the river's annual flood. The flood irrigated and fertilized the land along the Nile, making it possible for them to grow and harvest crops.
If they flood they could damage the crops because farmers their plant crops close to the rivers so they get the water
The cycle of the nile helped the farmers because, when it would flood, it would unearth alot of fertile, moist soil. This soil, would help farmers grow all sorts of crops. Before the flood came, the farmers would harvest all their crops so they wouldn't be washed away. After the harvest, the cycle would start all over again,
I don't think this would answer the full question that you asked, but Mesopotamians did use irrigation to protect their crops from flood and drought. Flood would probably wipe out their crops and drought would dry their crops. A thing I'm not sure of is how they would protect their crops from locusts. When I find the answer I'll be sure to send you that too. -Anon
Farmers diversified their crops
Heavy rain, Flood destroys crops, some time washes it out. Farmers and farming suffer a lot. When crops are destroyed or washed out, farmers go bankcrupt. They can't pay their debt, loan. And this have impact on social life.
