CARBON
Organic compounds are defined by having (or not having - i.e. inorganic) carbon in it's structure. It is not necessarily the "building block", though. Oxygen, Hydrogen, Nitrogen - all are needed to get molecules to the point of being able to have carbon be a part of them to make that organism living (very 'lay-person' answer - not correct terminology). Just having Carbon does not make a living organism.
The cell is the basic building block of all living things. yes and cells are made of hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen so those are your main building blocks of all living things :)

Carbon is THEE building block of all living things!!! :)
Atoms
The cell is the building block of all living things; it is the smallest component that all living things need in order to be classified as such.
Carbon is considered a building block for all living things. It is a key component of organic compounds found in all living organisms, such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids, making it essential for life.
Carbon is present in all living organisms and in many non-living things, such as minerals, rocks, and the atmosphere. It is the fundamental building block of all organic molecules.
The cell is the basic building block of all living things. yes and cells are made of hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen so those are your main building blocks of all living things :)
The central element for all living things is carbon. Carbon is the primary building block of organic molecules such as proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids, which are essential for life.
The smallest building block of all living things is 'Cells' This is what makes up, all of us & our DNA. (:
