The first thing that leads me towards that is in the first lines he says "warm smell of colitas, rising up in the air" , colitas is a type of marijuana. I think that refers to people moving on to harder and stronger drugs and alcoholic drinks. In the next stanza she tells him " We are all just prinsoners here of our own device."
