The Chinese flag is red to represent communism. The large star represents the government. The smaller stars, which each have a ray pointing towards the large star, represent the classes of people: workers, peasants, bourgeoisie, and patriotic capitalists.

The color red is supposed to be associated with communism. There are five stars presented with one bigger than the others. The larger one represents the leadership of the Communist Party while the smaller ones represented the classes of people (workers, peasants, bourgeoisie (concerned with property values) and capitalists (invested in business etc)).
