A semi-colon is a punctuation mark, there is one in the following set of brackets (;) while a Colon is (:). Neither of these punctuation marks have anything to do with the anatomical feature called the colon.

A semicolon is used most commonly to join two independent clauses. In the following sentence, for example, a semicolon (not a comma) is used to make two sentences one. "Judas Priest is a very popular metal band; wherefore their shows are often nearly sold-out." Semicolons are also used instead of commas to separate items in a series when those items themselves contain commas: "July 4, 1776; November 11, 1918; December 7, 1941; and September 11, 2001 are notable dates in American history.
