A pluralistic society is characterized by variations in ethnicity, religion, cultural heritage, socio-economic status, i.e. a "melting pot" as has been said of the US. By contrast, a homogeneous society would be primarily made up of one ethnic group, share a common language and heritage.

The simple answer is yes. There is a mainstream American culture, but it is composed of smaller subcultures within America. For instance, African-American culture and history form and contribute to American popular culture. So do European Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, Polynesian American, and Gay and Lesbian Americans, Conservative Americans, Liberal Americans, Christian Americans, Jewish Americans, Buddhist Americans, Muslim Americans, all also contribute and add to the cultural make up of America as a whole. However it is important to note that no subset of American culture exists independent from the others and as such is influenced by, and influences the cultural groups that interact with each other on a daily basis in America.
