The group of five stars form the constellation of the Southern Cross, a valuable navigation aid to early sailors travelling through the Southern Hemisphere.

There is a sixth star, known as the Federation or Commonwealth star. It has seven points, with six of the points representing the six states of Australia, and the seventh representing Australia's two mainland territories as well as its numerous external (offshore) territories.

There are six white stars present on the flag of Australia. The largest of these stars, under the Union Jack, is known as the Commonwealth Star, which represents the six (6) states of Australia. The five stars on the right half of the flag are intended to represent the Southern Cross constellation, a distinctive constellation visible from the Earth's southern hemisphere. On the flag, the stars of the Southern Cross also represent justice, prudence, temperance, and fortitude.
