Memorial Day is a day dedicated to those people, and animals, that have fallen in faithful service to the United States. ----------------------------- It is a federally-recognized holiday (banks and post office are closed) that falls on a Monday which means that most people get the day off from work. ----------------------------- This results in a "long weekend" which means additional parties can be planned for that Sunday night and cook-outs can be planned for that Monday. I like to think that most people spend a second, maybe two, recognizing the sacrifices of our friends and forefathers with a toast, a shot of whiskey, spill a beer, have a moment of silence, explain the day to the kids, or something along those lines.
Memorial Day is the day to honor all military personnel who have died while fighting for the United States in all wars and military actions in which the US was involved. It first observed on May 30, 1868, three years after the US Civil War ended.
