The pretty town of Lourdes is in a delightful position in the foothills of the Pyrennees in southern France. The town itself could be really beautiful but it is quite horrid as it so commercialised. Almost every other shop is a souvenir shop selling plasic figurines, crosses, water bottles and so on, all at grossly inflated prices. However, once you get past this, the area round the basilica and the cave itself where Bernadette saw her vision, is beautiful. There is no commercialism, and the whole area is dedicated to prayer and worship throughout the day. The basilica is stunning and the grotto where the vision took place is very understated - the only mark of its importance being a small altar placed in its mouth where masses take place constantly throughout the day. I have been once to Lourdes, but even as a non-Catholic, and someone for whom that style of worship is a little alien, I was still moved to tears by the sheer holiness of the place. I look forward to another trip there, God willing, one day.
