LP stands for a long-playing phonograph record. It was the primary recording medium for music beginning in 1948 and ending after the compact disc prevailed. Long playing records were made of vinyl and played at 331/3 rpm. They are still referred to as such. Long playing records are generally shorter than a CD but longer than an EP, or extended play. EPs are just longer than a single, often including about 4 or 5 songs.
In the US you can still buy brand new LP's.
probably long-playing. Music was recorded onto what was called "vinyl" back in the 40's, 50's, etc. There were 78 (78 revolutions per minute), 33, and 45, if memory serves. the small vinyls were usually only one song on each side of the vinyl disc. The next sizeable one had more than 1, and the long-playing (lp's) had a multiple number of songs. they were played on a record player that had an arm that was placed on the song. At the end of the arm was a stylus, sort of like a needle. In fact, when the stylus went bad, you would go to the music store and ask for a needle for your record player.
Stranger, still is that one time I had occasion to listen to a song and my stylus was bad and no way to get to the store. I used a regular needle, angled it, somehow connected it to the arm and played the song.

The huge advantage to an lp to cd recoder is obvious, you don't need an lp player anymore to play your favourite music. You can play your cd wherevere you are, wich with an lp player is impossible.
