In Germany, the name law is ruled by sexual equality since 1994: the woman can adopt her husband's name or the man may adopt his wife's surname. One of them-man or woman-may use a combined name of both surnames. The remaining single name is the "family name" (Ehename), which will be the surname of the children. If man and woman decide to keep and use their birth names after wedding as before (no combined name), they have to declare one of those names the "family name". A combined name is not possible as family name (exception: since 2005 it is possible to have a double name as family name if man or woman already had a double name and the partner adopts that name.
