Hermann's Tortoises are a Mediterranean tortoise species that live in rocky, well-drained, semi-arid grassland regions. They are strict herbivores.

Their diet consists mainly of broadleaved plants--flowers, leaves, and plant stalks.

In captivity, providing a nutritious diet for a tortoise can be challenging. Balance and variety are important. Many of the vegetables humans eat are not suitable for tortoises.

Good staple greens for Hermann's tortoises include dandelion greens, endive, clover, plantain (the weed, not the fruit), bindweed, sedum, mulberry leaves, hibiscus flowers, mallow, Bermuda grass, and other safe, edible weeds--even some 'spring mix' (commercial greens mix from a supermarket--don't make this the sole diet, or rely on it too much, as it's a bit too sweet and low in fiber--other supermarket greens to use occasionally include collards, mustard greens, and turnip greens.), and supplemental calcium. Use calcium with D3 if the tortoise is indoors, and without D3 if it is outdoors. (An outdoor pen should be considered necessary for optimal health in tortoises, even if it can only be used over the summer--directions for creating predator-proof, appropriate pens can be found online). Access to fresh forage outdoors is extremely beneficial. Fruit might be given in extremely low amounts, very occasionally, as a treat--the high sugar content can cause diarrhea, but they do love a strawberry, it just rocks their world. :)

Hermann's tortoises thrive, as you can see, on a diet of weeds, and their outdoor pen should be planted with plenty of them. Be certainly you collect weeds only from areas where there is NO chance they have been sprayed with pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, fertilizers, etc, and wash them before offering them.

You can find a free downloadable book on the care of Mediterranean tortoises, including Hermann's Tortoises. See related link.
