Traditionally, Christian Poles celebrate Christmas Eve with a dinner known as Wigilia. The Wigilia is a meatless meal, commemmorating the month long fast early Roman Catholics honored in preparation for the birth of Christ (Christmas Eve is not quite yet Christmas!) The Wigilia meal consists of a variety of fish, fruit, vegetable and grain dishes, including: borscht with mushroom dumplings, herring and carp, sauerkraut, noodles, breads and fruit compote.
On Christmas Day, once the fast has been broken, the celebratory meal consists of ham, kielbasa, roast duck (or goose) and a variety of dishes, depending on the family.
There's no special gifts. People give each other whatever they think would be nice and bring joy.
Polish people have a twenty four hour fast at Christmas and then they eat meatless foods, and a rice wafer.
