All religions have different places that they go to for praying - Christians go to a church, Hindus go to a temple - and a mosque is used by Muslims for praying and worshiping Allah (god).
most Muslims go to mosques to pray just like Christians go to churches to pray
This is true, but a Mosque is so much more. We have medical clinics, classes, schools, food banks, community outreach - not recruiting, but the Mosques will have large open house days were the surrounding community is invited to come and learn about Islam and the many different people who are Muslims.
In many ways, I guess it is similar, but Islam is so completely interwoven into our daily lives that we go to the Mosque as many as 5 times a day for males and at the least once a week for women.
A mosque is the centre of Muslim activities and so is a very important place in the religion. Mosque is the central place for learning about Islam. Also, the mosque helps bind the community together. Some argue that If you do not attend the mosque you are not a Muslim. Many people have different views on this. From the events of the emigration to Madinah, it is clear that Muhammad never stayed in any place unless he built a mosque there, for the believers to gather. He built the Qubaa mosque when he stayed there for four days. He also built a mosque between Qubaa and Madinah when the time of the Friday prayer came. When he arrived in Madinah, the first act he performed was the building of a mosque. This indicates the importance of a mosque in Islam. All acts of worship in Islam are for the purification of the soul, refinement of morals, and strengthening the relationship of all Muslims. This is why mosques carry a great social and spiritual place in the lives of the Muslims. The mosque is the thing that unites Muslims and their efforts. It refines their souls and awakens their minds and hearts. It solves problems. The mosque shows their strength and cohesiveness. "The mosque of Allah shall be visited and maintained by such as believe in Allah and the last day, establish regular prayer, and practise regular charity and fear none except Allah. It is they who are expected to be on true guidance."[Quran] This quote states that the people who come to the mosque are supposed to have the best morals and manners amongst Muslims because they are the guests of Allah. Allah promised that He would honor His guests. In return, the guests should respect the host, who is Allah. Also this means being a good Muslims can only be shown if you attend the mosque on a regular basis.
For prayers
Masjids had greater roles in the past than what they have now,
Muslims used them to establish meetings, solve problems, plan for wars, as a shelter for the poor, a place where they celebrated fests and marriages, a place where charity was collected, a place for earning knowledge, having lectures and meeting scholars, besides prayer.
This is why Muslims care much about their Masjids.
