Joseph's brothers were jealous when Jacob gave Joseph a coat of many colors as a gift, as it symbolized favoritism towards him.
Joseph had 11 brothers. Ten of these were born of Leah and Jacob, and Joseph and his little brother Benjamin were born of Rachel and Jacob. Until Benjamin was born, Joseph was Jacob's favourite son because his mother Rachel was his favourite wife. This made the other brothers feel rejected and feel resentful towards Joseph. Also, Joseph was quite nieve and told his brothers about the dreams he had where he had become more important than them, making the brothers despise him even more. Rachel died giving birth to Benjamin.
When Jacob went to Egypt it was because of a famine in the land of Canaan where he and his family lived. They were not exiles. Jacob had twelve sons, one of which was Joseph who was sold into slavery by his brothers and he was taken to Egypt. He was favored by God over time and became the second in Command under Pharaoh in Egypt. Jacob sent his other sons to Egypt to buy wheat so they would not starve. Eventually Joseph was made known to his brothers and so Joseph invited his father, Jacob and his brothers and their families to come to Egypt and live. Jacob and his sons and their families in total who went to Egypt were seventy persons.
It is very colorful and it has goat's blood on it from his brothers
Abraham made a covenant with God; and God swore also to Isaac and Jacob that He would uphold the covenant of Abraham with them too. For Joseph, no such statement or covenant was made. The earlier covenant applied to Joseph and all of his brothers equally and was not reiterated until the time of Moses.See also the Related Links.Link: The covenantLink: Abraham, Isaac and Jacob
a multicoloured coat
The story is in the book of Genesis. Joseph, son of Jacob, had 10 very jealous brothers. Joseph was his father's favorite son. His brothers decided to get rid of him. They sold him to some traders who took Joseph to Egypt. Joseph went through a lot in Egypt until he was able to decipher a dream for Pharoah. Pharoah made him his chief advisor. Then, there's a famine all over the Middle East. But Joseph forsaw this famine in Pharoah's dream. So food was rationed and saved from times of plenty. Jacob hears that there's lots of food in Egypt. So he sends his sons down to Egypt to buy food. After playing with their minds a bit, Joseph invites his brothers and their families to come to Egypt and settle in Goshen.
Joseph wore a coat of many colours which made his elder brothers jealous.
Joseph's "coat of many colors" was NOT a "dream coat". It was very real. Joseph was so beloved by his father that his father gave to him a coat with many colors woven throughout. Genesis 37. "When Joseph was seventeen years old, he often tended his father's flocks with his half brothers. . . Now Jacob loved Joseph more than any of his other children because Joseph had been born to him in his old age. So one day he gave Joseph a special gift -- a beautiful robe." (The KJV says "made him a coat of many colors.") Joseph had many brothers, and everyone in that age had a "coat" or outer garment. The brothers were very jealous of Joseph's favor - that favor being due to (1) the fact that Rachel, Joseph's mother, was very much-adored by Jacob but had remained barren until Jacob was old, then God answered their prayers by giving them Joseph; and (2) Joseph was known to Jacob to be having prophetic dreams which later proved to be 100% true, and sent by God, and affirmable through Scriptures. Joseph had dreamed that one day, he would be royalty and his ten older brothers and his father would bow the knee to him! This infuriated the already-jealous brothers, who decided to plot to kill Joseph. They took him far from home and were going to murder him...but his younger brother stood up for him, and they finally just roughed him up, sold him to slave traders, and put the blood of an animal on Joseph's coat of many colors, then sent it back to Jacob, who mourned for his beloved (and he thought, dead) son. Later on, Joseph served Potiphar, the reigning Pharoah, with such honesty and truth that he became head of all Potiphar's territories, literally carrying Potiphar's authority with him everywhere he went. Joseph's brothers went to Egypt where Joseph was, due to a huge famine taking place, and begged for help...they didn't recognized Joseph but Joseph knew them..and through a series of tests and revelations, Joseph bestowed foregiveness on his family and took them into his protection from famine.
No, he didn't.He still couldn't completely forgive his brothers until he met them and told them that he was their brother, Joseph. When he told his brothers to hand Benjamin to him, his brothers didn't wanted to, so Joseph got angry as they sold him. But he eventually did.Answer:The verses state explicitly that Joseph begged his brothers not to mistreat him (Genesis 42:21), which makes it clear that he did not accept willingly what they did to him (in Genesis ch.37). However, he did forgive them completely (Genesis ch.45-46, and ch.50). Note that the accusation he made in Gen. ch.42 was not because of a lack of forgiveness. Rather, he wanted to make them consider their mistakes and repent to God.
the sheaf in Josephs dream represented him and his brothers sheaves bowing down to him which made his brothers jealous.
Reuben was the eldest son of Jacob and Leah. He lost his birthright to Joseph(The first born son of Jacob and Rachel) and it was Joseph who received the blessing from Jacob, which should have gone to Reuben. Reuben became an enemy of Joseph for many years but finally made up. The tribe of Reuben became of less importance politically, and its members became less as the years went by.
