1) National Security: protection of of a nation's borders and territories against invasion or control by foreign powers. Also helps determine how the US deals with other nations.

2) Free and Open Trade:Maintaining trade with other nations and preserving access to necessary Natural Resources have been basic goals of US foreign policy. This is an absolute necessity for the US.

3) World Peace: American leaders work for world peace because they believe it helps the nation avoid outside conflicts and aids national security. The US tries to help other nations settle disputes and has also supplied economic aid to at-risk countries, in part to prevent uprising and revolutions.

4) Democratic Governments: The US aids democratic nations and helps others create democratic political systems. With US help, many formerly Communist nations in Europe began to form democratic political systems in the 1990's.

5) Concern for Humanity: Victims of natural disasters or starvation have looked to the US for help. In such times of crisis, the US has responded by providing food, medial supplies, and technology assistance for humanitarian reasons. At the same time, this aid serves the strategic interests of the US by maintaining political stability in the world.

* The question regarding the goals of a foreign policy may be different based on the objectives of any particular government. The above mentioned foreign policy goal "national security" in the vast majority of the world's nations is not a responsibility of foreign policy, which most often delegated to a department of state or perhaps to a department of foreign affairs.

National security is usually the main objective of a nation's department of defense.

It is usually true that a nation's foreign policy is coordinated with its defense. However, it only helps the department of defense. In fact the policies of defense are very often related to a department of state's policies. There is no question, however, that a department of defense's main job is to defend a nation.

* Free & open trade policies are often the best policy for any nation, however, it needs to be pointed out that Japan's economy works very fine by not having one. Trade policies in general are based upon the needs and requirements of each particular nation.

* World peace is usually the best policy of any country and the primary overseer would be a department of state or foreign affairs. History has recorded, however, that policies of aggression have been used in order to successfully obtain any given nation's goals. For a few hundred years, the foreign policy of Great Britain was Imperialism. It served Great Britain well. The expansion of the US westward involved among many things, a successful Mexican War, which gave the US California and much of the US's Southwest. Please note, the writer is not speaking about morality. What is was is what is was.

* Democratic Governments are not the only kinds any nation may make an alliance with, or furnish foreign aid to. Even the US, aids non-democratic governments abroad to further its foreign, defense and domestic economy goals. This is true for most governments. For example, the aid given to various governments in Egypt, often stipulated and stipulates at times, that the "aid" or at least some of it would be used to buy F-16 fighter jets made by Lockheed-Martin.

* Concerns for humanity are goals for any nation to pursue, however, once again it depends on which nation we are speaking about. The nation of Liberia, as example has the foreign policy goals of receiving aid to help its people.

The first answer based on USA foreign policy is fine. No answer can be perfect. The areas of debate revolve upon many factors, however, defense is a Department of Defensive priority.

The foreign policy of a nation is to promote the global objectives of the nation it represents. This can summarized as follows:

1. Pursuing treaties and agreements with foreign governments that are favorable to both parties. The term "both" is used in that very often a treaty that is not a fair one may cause the entire intent of the agreement to cause a conflict later on;

A. Form military alliances with other countries that serve to protect the domestic and foreign goals of the nation;

B. Form trade agreements that are beneficial to all parties concerned;

2. Protect the nation's citizens that are traveling or doing business within the borders of other nations;

3. Join various international organizations that benefit the nation. Examples of this might mean the United Nations, the World Bank and other international bodies;

4. Pursue policies that create goodwill for the nation; and

5. Make recommendations to the executive branch of its home government concerning foreign policy.

Many of the above measures are overlapping and must always never be in conflict with other official departments of the nation, As an example, many nations have a department of commerce, the USA has one. This department helps businesses at home and abroad conduct business with foreign governments and foreign based companies. Foreign policy agreements and treaties must take into consideration the goals and objectives of such organizations and vive versa.
