The vice president is the next in line, should anything happen to the president. His chief responsibility is to serve as president of the Senate: he presides over the official vote count of the electoral college, and he can cast a tie-breaking vote on legislation. Historically, this is a power most vice presidents have used sparingly.

The only real duty of the VP is to preside over the US Senate. The VP becomes president if the president can not function, so a conscientious vice-president might take steps to be ready to step in if necessary. Recent VP's are often asked by the President to take on special assignments or make public appearances on behalf of the President, but the function is not mentioned in the Constitution.

The Vice President has many duties, since he is the second in command to over 300 million people. First off, he is the first in the line of succession if the President were to decease while in office. He also presides over the Senate, and he may also cast a tie breaking vote in the Senate if need be.

In the United States, the elected position of vice president does not have allot of required duties. Two duties, however, are important. The vice president is the presiding official in the US Senate. And, should there be a tie in the votes in the Senate, the vice president must vote to break the tie. If by chance the US president dies or is disabled, the vice president fills that office. Full time if the president has died or serves until a disabled president can recover health to perform presidential duties.
