Maracas would go in the percussion section. If you look at instruments from sections besides percussion, you will see that they all can produce melody, and that most percussion instruments can only create rhythm. The exceptions to this rule are the xylophone and the marimba, both of which are in the percussion section, although they can produce melody.
The rhythm is Larry Graham gettin' funky on the base, Sly's sister on the horn ( as well as others), guitar and keyboard. Pretty much the entire band is the rhythm section on all their tunes
The Rhythm Section Jazz Band was created in 2002.

Any song that requires a little more of a rhythm section. Tambourine always adds a special pop to a pop or rock song. Maracas also add a smooth rhythm to ballads.
In a modern rock group they are Lead, Rhythm, and Bass, the Bass guitar is part of the rhythm section together with the rhythm (2d) guitar and of course the drums. the basic lay-out of a modern rock quartet is Lead Guitar, rhythm Guitar, Bass, and Drums. Lead and rhythm can even be identical instruments playing, of course, different parts, the Bass has four strings, Lead and Rhythm would have six each unless twelve-string guitars were used. this basic band layout dates from early Beatles times. there were a very few rock trios, with One Guitar, one Bass, and a drummer such as the Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, for experts only!
