The two types of percussion instruments are pitched percussion and unpitched percussio n; pictch percussion produces a note and an audiable pitch, whereas unpitched percussion merely produces a note.

There are two categories I am aware of: 1) pitched such as piano, timpani, marimba, xylophone, celeste, bells for examples, and 2) unpitched such as snare drum, cymbals, bass drum, also as examples only. There are many more which fit in either of the two categories.

Do you mean Country and Western, or generally Western Hemisphere music? The latter uses all sorts of drums, cymbals, wood blocks. There are many types of drums; snare drums, bass drums, congas, bongos, and kettle drums. Mallet instruments such as vibraphones, xylophones, and marimbas are also percussion instruments. Some styles of music use a washboard as a percussion instrument.
