Teachers should act nicer for there students. Often that makes the students like and obey you, but if they don't obey you then you may act strict. They can drink coffee whenever they want. ELISA

In order of importance:

  1. The "Ah Ha!" moment - having stood in front of a group of children for weeks trying to explain a difficult concept, that instant when the lights go on is the ultimate payoff. It's like watching stars being born.
  2. One to three months off for end of trimester/summer break.
  3. Boxes and cartons of cast off pens and pencils that seem to appear out of nowhere.
  4. A collection of unclaimed, miss-matched, dirty socks that have been rescued from the back of the room (usually from behind a radiator).
  5. The world's largest ball of chewed gum.
  6. The enmity of the public at large who believe they can do the job you the teacher does simply because they sat in a classroom for 12 - 16 years of primary and secondary education, notwithstanding that you were specially trained for the job.
  7. A yearly wage of $34K - $70k rather than the starting neighborhood of $113,400 (based on a babysitting wage of $7 per hour per child for an average secondary load of 150 students for six hours per day and 180 days of school per year).
  8. The unqualified, unwelcome, and illogical interference of legislative bodies who have no idea what teachers must accomplish and contend with while they attempt to accomplish it. (Teachers! When was the last time a legislator requested to come into your classroom for a week or a months to get even the most basic understanding of what you do and the matters with which you must contend?)
  9. Low budgets that force the teacher to dip into private funds to pay for much needed resources in their own classroom. How many lawyers do you know who have to buy pencils and legal pads for their clients? Do chefs buy the meals for their customers? Do doctors pay the medical bills and prescription fees of their patients? But, teachers are expected to purchase classroom materials and books for their students.

It isn't all negative. My tongue in cheek attempt here is more a journey through reality. There are countless fringe benefits that teachers enjoy. Most of them have names like Jack, Jesi, Katie, Tim, John, Obadiah, Laurie, etc. The interaction that teachers have with students is usually more than enough reason for anyone who loves teaching to teach, despite all of the negative experiences one can have. No one goes into teaching for the money or the prestige. There is only one reason to become a teacher...to teach.
