The Roman nobility were known as the Patrician class and came originally from the oldest Roman families.
The nobility in ancient Roman society were called the patricians and the plebeians. Yes, it's well known that the plebeian were the poor and the disenfranchised, but that was only at the beginning of the republic. Over the years the plebs gained their rights and status and wealth and were considered the aristocrats along with the patricians because they were one of the two groups who could trace their ancestry back to the founding of the city. In addition, one of the consuls had to be a plebeian from about the last quarter of the republic.

In the early days of the city the nobility were the patricians. As the city grew and the plebeians gained their rights, the plebeians too became the nobility. this was because the Romans were a very class conscious people. The patricians and the plebeians were the only two groups of families who could trace their ancestry to the beginning of the city. The other people who were newcomers, although Roman citizens, did not belong to either group, so they were the proletariat.

It depends on which time you are talking about. At the beginning of the city the nobility was the patricians. Over time the plebeians rose in status and also became the nobility. By the mid to late republic the patricians and plebeians were considered the nobility or aristocrats and the rest of the people the proletariat.
