Some recurrent 'thing' that can define a piece of literature as a certain type. This 'thing' can be anything: setting, character, narration, plot, theme, writing style.
For example horses, cattle, deserts, scrub land, ten galleon hats, Victorian style dresses, savages, dirt poverty and lots of guns is a western motif.
Some aspect of the story (it can be almost anything) that is consistent throughout the writers body of work.
Jane Austin always wrote about young girls in love. This could be said to be her motif.
Edgar Allan Poe always wrote about death and the macabre. This was his motif.
A motif is a recurring idea, concept, symbol, theme or object in a literary work. For example,"light" in Romeo and Juliet or "madness" in Macbeth, or the "seaech for self awareness" in the works of Walter Dean Myers.
In art, an example of a motif is the acanthus leaf, Degas' ballerinas. It can also be a pattern of color or light (Vermeer).

dance motif is a dance performed in drama
Motif development is essential when choreographing a dance as it acts as a building block for your routine. Developing a motif allows you to change certain things about the motif, for example you can change the actions or dynamics in the dance. Doing this to each motif you create enables you to play around with your routine or reinforce the theme of your dance.
A motif is a piece of movement, that can vary in length, that is repeated during the whole performance. Usually the motif is changed, reversed, extended when it is repeated often.

Another term that usually refers to a piece of (although it can also refer to a rhythm or a chord progression) is "motif." A motif is a short musical idea-shorter than a phrase-that occurs often in a piece of music. A short melodic idea may also be called a motif, a motive, a cell, or a figure.

Explain what is meant by the term 'dementia.'
From the way I have seen this term used, it seems to refer to the Love Interest as a major element in a plot. Many nineteenth-century writers was suspicious of the Love Interest motive, did not use it as such, or had it watered down to Long-lost relatives- such as the sister of Ben-Hur in the novel by that name who was in a Leper Colony prior to her being cured by Christ. I think the term is of Scandinavian origin. Lois Lane is an obvious Solweig motif for Superman.
