It is very nice. Also very remote, not alot of people live there. In the summer the best way to get around is by canoe, even today, and you can go days without seeing anyone or even signs of people so that is rather different.
The forest varies depending on the area and by the Hudson Bay coast the trees are small sometimes just bushes.
I found winter to be the best time to travel. In the winter it gets very cold, I spent days ski-dooing at -40c and colder but it is not so bad if you work your way to those temps. In the winter the land, mostly swampy or muskeg is frozen but not all of it. You do have to be careful and alert as breaking through the ice or snow can be very dangerous.
If you get a chance at least fly over or into the area. Visit Churchill or York Factory, maybe take the train to Moosonee, it is well worth the effort and expense.
You are referring to a huge area of wetlands covering about 25% of the area of the province of Ontario plus parts of Manitoba and Québec. It lies south of Hudson Bay and James Bay, and is mainly uninhabited except for a few small settlements.
