When Captain Richard Pearson of the Serapis asked Jones, "Have you struck? Do you call for Quarter?", in other words, was John Paul Jones prepared to give up the fight and surrender his ship, Jones, according to most accounts, replied, "I have not yet begun to fight." There is, however, some doubt if these were the actual words spoken by Jones.
John Paul Jones said that because he wanted to show his independence and to show that he would not give up. He said this when he was at battle with a british ship and his ship was badly damaged. the british captin yelled out if he surrendered, and john said this famous quote. I have not yet begun to fight!
